1. Metanil Yellow test :Metanil yellow is a synthetic dye that is a common adulterant used in turmeric powder.To check the presence of metanil, add a few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid and water to a test tube of turmeric. Stir it well. If the mixture turns pink, the presence of metanil yellow is confirmed. Consumption of metanil yellow leads to food poisoning and metanil is carcinogenic.
2. Checking for chalk powder :The presence of chalk powder in turmeric is confirmed if bubbles emerge when a few drops of hydrochloric acid are added to a test tube filled with turmeric.
3. Testing turmeric finger for authenticity :Turmeric fingers are adulterated with harmful colors to give an appealing color. Water can be added to check if any color leaves from the turmeric finger.
4. Water test :The easiest way to check for turmeric powder adulteration is the water test. Add some turmeric powder to a glass of water. Do not stir. Leave it for 30 mins. Pure turmeric will settle at the bottom of the glass.
